LIBRA: Shaping the future of bioreactors

Introduction

Bioprocessing industries are rapidly evolving, and precision in monitoring critical parameters is more important than ever. The LIBRA project, funded by Horizon Europe, is paving the way for transformative changes in bioreactor monitoring by combining cutting-edge AI and light-based sensing technologies. This revolutionary project aims to streamline nutrient and pathogen detection in real-time, offering unparalleled precision and efficiency.

What is LIBRA?

LIBRA, an acronym for “Light-Based Multisensing Device for Screening of Pathogens and Nutrients in Bioreactors,” is a groundbreaking initiative that integrates Raman spectroscopy, Asymmetric Mach–Zehnder Interferometers (aMZI), and artificial intelligence. Its goal is to create a compact, robust device capable of monitoring bioreactor conditions with high accuracy. By addressing current bottlenecks in bioprocess monitoring, LIBRA offers significant improvements in process control and scalability.

How Does LIBRA Work?

The LIBRA system leverages:

  • Raman Spectroscopy: Known for its sensitivity and specificity, this technology detects molecular vibrations to quantify key nutrients like glucose, nitrate, and lactate.
  • aMZI Sensors: These compact, high-precision photonic devices enhance nutrient detection and pathogen identification.
  • AI Algorithms: Advanced machine learning models process spectral data, ensuring reliable predictions and streamlined data interpretation.

These technologies work together to deliver real-time insights, helping researchers and manufacturers optimize processes, reduce waste, and improve sustainability.

Why Does LIBRA Matter?

Modern bioreactors demand precise and continuous monitoring to maintain optimal growth conditions and ensure product quality. LIBRA addresses this by:

  • Improving Accuracy: Detecting even trace levels of critical nutrients and pathogens.
  • Enhancing Efficiency: Offering real-time insights that reduce delays in decision-making.
  • Sustainability: Minimizing resource waste and environmental impact.

By aligning with global sustainability goals, LIBRA is a step forward in transforming biomanufacturing practices.

Looking Ahead

As the LIBRA project progresses, it is setting new benchmarks for bioreactor monitoring systems. From integrating synthetic data for enhanced AI modeling to creating user-friendly interfaces, the project is focused on delivering a practical, scalable, and impactful solution for both academic and industrial applications.

Stay tuned as we continue to share updates on how LIBRA is revolutionizing the bioprocessing industry.
